Born in Lincoln in 1922, the elder of two children of Randolph Jeans and Lilian nee Clifford. The family appear to have lived in Felixstowe at different times & were at 3 High Beach in 1938, prior to this they were at "Glenside" Beach Road East. Randolph, an engineer, appears to have frequently worked abroad after serving with the Army Service Corps.
At 0900 hrs 29th July 1943, the MV Cornish City was en route from Lourenco Marques and Durban, for Aden and Suez with a cargo of coal had dispersed from convoy DN-53 when she was struck amidships by one of two torpedoes fired from U-177. She sank within 1 minute southeast of Madagascar, 37 of her 43 crew were killed, the other six managing to rescue themselves on rafts. Edwin is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
