Born in 1919 in Walton, elder of two children of William George Youngman and Annie Elizabeth nee Bruce. in 1939 the family are living at 48 King Street, Walton with William working as a council labourer, William died in 1941. Charles sister Joan was born in 1921 and married Douglas Keeble in 1944.
Guardsman Youngman was with the 1st Battalion who became part of the British Expeditionary Force in Belgium and France. Between the 26th May and 6th June 1940 the BEF were evacuated from Dunkirk with the "Little Ships". Charles was not reported missing until the 3rd August 1940. On 20th January 1942 he was reported as "presumed killed in action" 1st/2nd June 1940. Commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial
