Born in 1921 in Chile, the eldest of three sons of Andrew and Elizabeth Michael Macdonald of Helsby, Cheshire. In 1939 the family were living at 13 Princes Gardens, Felixstowe, Andrews was Superintendant of the RASC Food Supply Depot.
